Real Estate Resources: Moving Checklist for Home Buyers & Sellers


Before You Leave...

Give forwarding address: Post office (visit website), Credit Cards, Subscriptions (Newspapers, Magazines, Movie Delivery service, etc.), Bank, Employer/Industry Contacts, Friends and Relatives

___

Bank: Transfer Funds, Arrange credit references

___

Insurance: Notify of new location for coverage: Life, Auto, Health, Fire & Auto

___

Automobile: DMV, AAA, FasTrak

___

Cancel Utilities: Gas, light, water, telephone, fuel, garbage, cable/satellite;Get refunds on any deposits made

___

Medical & Dental: Ask Doctor and Dentist for referrals; Transfer needed prescriptions: eyeglasses, etc.; Obtain records: medical, birth, etc.

Pets: Ask about regulations for licenses, vaccinations, tags, etc.

___

Moving Company: Make appointment

___

Make appointments at new address: Phone company (DSL activation can take 12-14 days after activating land line); Make appointment for cable/satellite, Make appointment for window coverings

And don't forget to : Empty freezer; plan use of foods; Defrost freezer and clean refrigerator. Place charcoal inside to dispel odors; Have appliances serviced for moving; Clean rugs or clothing before moving; have them moving-wrapped; Plan for special needs of infants and/or pets


On Moving Day...

Carry enough cash or travelers checks to cover cost of moving services and expenses until you make banking connections in your new city

___

Carry jewelry and documents yourself; or use registered mail

___

Plan for transporting pets

___

Provide a friend or relative with your itinerary; use as message headquarters

___

Double check closets, drawers, shelves to be sure they are empty

___

Leave all old keys needed by new owner with Realtor® or neighbor


At Your New Address...

Check on service of telephone, gas, electricity, water and garbage

___

Check pilot light on all relevant equipment, such as stove, hot water heater and furnace

___

Ask Mail Carrier for mail being held for you, if any

___

Apply for state driver's license

___

Have new address recorded on driver's license

___

Visit city offices and update voting information

___

Register car in a timely manner to avoid any penalties

___

Register children in school

___

Arrange for medical services: Doctor, Dentist, Veterinarian, etc.
